Radikon IGP Venezia Giulia "Sivi" Bianco 2022
Stanko Radikon was a maverick in a land of mavericks. The town of Oslavia, on a relatively tiny stretch of hills north of the border town of Gorizia in the Isonzo zone of Friuli, is home to a number of talented and individualistic wine makers. From Radikon’s home, you can carry a plate of freshly cooked polenta to Edi Kante and Jasko Gravner, two other world-renowned winemakers, and still eat it piping hot. Stanko was a visionary and forward-thinking winemaker who revolutionized the process of skin contact white wine production.
Stanko Radikon passed away in the year 2016, leaving the estate in the capable hands of his son Sasa Radikon, his daughter Ivana and his wife Suzana. Having worked by his father’s side for over a decade before taking over, Saša continues his father’s legacy, producing exquisite wines of tremendous complexity. Each year, the Radikon family participates in an event called the Zivijo, a celebration aimed at remembering Stanko Radikon and his contribution to the world of wine.
The Radikon S Range was launched in 2010, as Sasa’s personal project. This line includes the Venezia Giulia Pinot Grigio Sivi (a single-varietal) and their RS (Merlot and Pignolo). These wines are naturally fermented, macerated for 8-14 days in oak vats and matured for 18 months in oak. They are bottled with a small amount of sulfur and aged in bottle for 2 months before release.
The 2022 Bianco 'Sivi', Radikon’s 100% Pinot Grigio that spends eight to ten days macerating on the skins, is a vivid, dark, pink color with violet hues. This is wonderfully fresh and floral with a spicy bouquet that blends rose petals with ginger and incense. It’s potent and savory in style, with juicy acidity to balance the depths of tart citrus and wild berry fruits that cascade throughout. With a balance of sweet spice and cheek-puckering citrus it adds a remarkable contrasts through the long and perfumed finale.
